Matty and the Moonlight Horse - all royalties go to Redwings Horse Sanctuary!

Today I have been looking back and was reminded that the first book I made available for kindle was Matty and the Moonlight Horse - an exciting, fast paced adventure for pony lovers of 8 years upwards.  So if you haven't read it yet, please do take a look.

From a writer's viewpoint, Matty is the favourite of my characters.  Kind hearted, bold and impulsive, she is always getting into trouble - but mostly because she cares!

And all the royalties from the Matty e-book trilogy are donated to the wonderful Redwings Horse Sanctuary.

Have a great weekend!

Redwings and the Matty Pony Book Series

As a supporter of the equine charity Redwings, I felt honoured to be informed that my Matty Horse and Pony Series now features on their website here - https://www.redwings.org.uk/our-partners - along with other supporters and partners.

I donate ALL my royalties from the 3 books in the series to Redwings and am proud to do what I can to help horses and ponies in need. The Matty books are fun, fast reads for pony mad children, teens and adults! And they were the first ever of my pony books to be available in digital form for e-readers.

Pony on the Trail

Pony on the Trail, my latest fast paced novella for 8-12 year olds, is now out in Sweden, Finland and Norway.  This was great fun to write, and I had to research skateboarding and Western Riding (for which I am grateful to the advice from Pauline Brimson and Fallowbrook Western Riding Club). The story is all about friendship, differences and how teasing can quickly become bullying.  However, it does have a happy and positive outcome!

I hope I might be able to make it available in the English language via kindle later this year.

Hard to believe I last posted in April - time flies.......

My latest e-book, out today, is now available on Amazon, all territories - and for the first time in the English language (previously only available in Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish).

Trick Riders is 2 books in one for pony mad readers! Share with young Tia Michaelson her hopes, fears, dreams and dramas as she discovers the exciting world of equestrian vaulting!

Cover design Klaus Hartleben

Book 1: Trick Rider
Shy Tia Michaelson is finding it hard to adjust to moving home again, and misses her friends – and especially the ponies at her old riding school. Exploring her new rural surroundings, Tia ends up getting lost. She wanders into a ramshackle barn and sees something magical - twin teenage girls her own age performing elegant and graceful movements on their talented horse, Twilight – and discovers they are members of a junior equestrian vaulting team.

Despite a rocky start, new friendships develop, and the girls, Hope and Faith, help Tia search for the pony of her dreams, although there are plenty of obstacles along the way. Tia quickly becomes fascinated by the world of vaulting, and when their lunger, Matt, is injured in an accident, Tia finds herself stepping into the spotlight. But can she really learn how to control Twilight – or will her nerves get the better of her?

Book 2: Tia’s Challenge
Tia is enjoying her gorgeous new pony and when an unexpected vacancy comes up in the vaulting team, she secretly harbours a dream of taking up the place. But her fears and anxieties about falling, which go back to a past gymnastics accident, stop her from volunteering. By the time she musters up the courage, someone else has been chosen – someone Tia has already taken an instant dislike to, after a misunderstanding at the stables.

Tia starts to feel a bit left out, as everyone is training for the next competition – this time at a big regional event. So instead of moping, she decides to focus on the jumping class at a local show. However, she can’t resist secretly practicing her vaulting skills with a new ally.
Then another opportunity arises when Faith becomes team captain – will this give Tia the chance she both desperately wants and fears? How will she convince the ever critical Hope that she won’t let everyone down?

A series of unexpected events leads to tension in the team, which results in Tia trying to juggle training for jumping and vaulting with her schoolwork. Something has to give – but what?
In an effort to impress everyone, Tia attempts a daring acrobatic move – which ends in disaster. Tia needs help, and it comes from a place she least expects. With secrets, setbacks and uncertainties ahead, can Tia finally overcome her fears to achieve her dream of competing – and winning - in the vaulting contest?

I'm delighted that I have another two-part story in the wonderful Pony magazine. Amongst the excellent features, articles and gorgeous photos, you will find Katie's Promise, Part 1, in the August issue.  It's about teenager Katie who gets the chance to take care of a stunning Welsh Cob called Parsifal - the snag is, Katie doesn't think she likes horses...(I know, hard to imagine!).  I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

So if you fancy a read for JUST 99p and want to grab it before the price reverts back to  £2.01 click on the icon on the sidebar.

About Joyrider by Jane Ayres

Fourteen year old Linzi has it all. Or so it seems. She's bright, pretty, popular, lives in a glamorous clifftop apartment and has her own perfect horse - a stunning copper chestnut gelding called Ambrose. But appearances can be very deceptive....

On the other side of the sleepy seaside town, teenager Bex lives in a tiny flat with her widowed mum above the café they both run. She's prickly, moody, and a loner, trying to escape from her tragic past. She doesn't want friends - especially not girls like Linzi.

Linzi suspects her rival, Sheldon, who resents her for beating him to a place in the jumping team, is the mystery joyrider - someone who takes other peoples horses at night and rides them - and she is furious when her beloved Ambrose is targeted. However, afterwards, Ambrose seems different, and Linzi is baffled to discover that his behaviour is much better than before. Can the joyrider have a magic touch?

She determines to solve the mystery and discover the true identity - and motives - of the joyrider. But in the process she soon finds herself - and Bex - in terrible danger.

This exciting novella is a fast paced read for children, pre-teens, teenagers and young adults.

Cuddly Pony Party!

What I like about social media is the way you can make connections and learn about the amazing things that other people are doing out in the big wide world. I came across Cuddly Pony Party on Facebook via a childhood horsey friend, and I absolutely love the idea. and wanted to know more.  So I contacted Karen Perry, an equine and canine therapist who started it all and asked her some questions.  If only Cuddly Pony Parties existed when I was growing up!

Tell us about Cuddly Pony Party - where did you get the idea, and how did you make the idea a reality?
We moved to our dream property, an old brick 1950's house, not very inspiring in itself, but the view from the bathroom window took our breath away; five acres and a dreamy orchard. I knew Daisy had to grow up with ponies! She was 6 months old when we moved in, my imagination went into overdrive, and Cuddly Pony Party was born!!  I've worked within the equine industry since 1982 as a groom, manager and instructor, and have run my own equine therapy business since 1995. Cuddly Pony Party is a family run business.  My mum, chief assistant, is a retired primary school teacher and my dad, also a retired school teacher, is our photographer. And my 6 year old daughter Daisy helps care for the ponies at home and at the parties! We bring the ponies to children's parties, where they can groom, cuddle and fuss the ponies. They can brush their beautiful blonde manes and tails, and decorate them with sparkles and glitter and ribbons! Then they can each have a ride on their favourite pony, supervised at all times by experienced handlers. The birthday boy or girl will receive a birthday card and rosette from the ponies!

Did you encounter any challenges?
Getting insurance was the biggest challenge. Most insurance companies said, “Ponies? Children? Parties? On your bike!” Thankfully, I persisted, and eventually found a company who took the risk.

Also, finding ponies who looked cuddly and adorable but had the right temperament. Not all ponies love children......! Twinkle was first to arrive and was totally well behaved when I tried her. Got her home and she trampled chickens and dogs who dared venture into her field and bit Daisy! Luckily, we persevered, and now she is THE most amazing pony and Daisy’s best friend! Bubbles we found in a riding school near Peterborough. We liked him as he whinnied to everyone and was used to kids and dogs all over him. He did come with bad riding school habits, he has to stop for many toilet breaks, and he hates going away from the other ponies, but he fits in really well here and adores being adored! He is always the first to speak to me when I open the back door in the morning!

Can you tell us about the ponies?
The tiny guys, Nutkin and Scrumpy, have only been here 18 months. I bought them unseen from their lovely breeder in Berkshire. They arrived on a racehorse wagon in the dark and sleet two days after Christmas. We shuffled them into their field, only to find they had escaped by the morning! Tango, our Belgian Shepherd, was delighted; he seriously thought I had bought him a sheep for Christmas,(Scrumpy was small, white and fluffy) and he herded them back into the field and has stalked them ever since! It has taken them a while to grow into their role as Cuddly Ponies, although Nutkin was always over friendly and sitting on our laps! She was the first to enter the house and join us for breakfast! Scrumpy was wild and scared for the first year, and I despaired of ever finding a role for him, but he clicked this year and at Belton Horse Trials he met the public like an old pro, kissing small girls and falling asleep whilst having his mane plaited! We couldn’t do without him now, and yes, he has been in the house too.......!

Have you always been a pony lover?
I have always been pony mad from an early age. My parents are unhorsey and we lived in a suburb of Nottingham, so having a pony was never an option. I couldn't even have regular riding lessons until I was 12! To get through this pony-less existence, I used to write madly, bashing away at on old typewriter, in a totally different world! On paper I could be Lucinda or Henrietta, who lived in the country with any number of horses and dogs around me. I must have written 8 or 10 "books" like this, but I hated people to read them; it was as though they were prying into my private thoughts. I am lucky enough now to be living my dreams for real!

Has social media helped with your marketing?
Word of mouth is always the best form of advertising but Facebook has been amazing. I am a technophobe, so I have been slow to catch on! I try to update the ponies’ Facebook page once or twice a week and I know I have a lot of young Cuddly Pony fans who regularly check out what the ponies are up to and where we are going to be next. It’s a wonderful way to keep in touch and advertise what we are doing. I also have a fantastic web site which one of my equine therapy clients designed for me, with purple stars tumbling down the page. They magically turn to snow in the winter months! I have yet to discover Twitter.......!

And when it comes to books, who/what do you like to read?
I am an avid reader, although I seriously struggle for time these days! Even now my favourite books have an equestrian link somewhere! You can’t beat a good book for decent escapism, and thankfully I never want to escape too far from horse and pony chaos! All my life my favourite author has been KM Peyton, who wrote the fabulous Flambards trilogy. She was instrumental in my childhood escapism, as some of her books about horseless children seemed to totally be made for me. Even now, her books like Fly By Night and The Team are brilliant reads.

I also love Fiona Walker, author of great big horsey and doggy romps, ideal for holidays! And I am hugely enjoying, for the second time, working through the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, a very funny crime writer. Laugh a minute and not a horse in sight, who would've thought it?

Bio
I’m Karen Perry, somewhere in my forties, equine and canine therapist by day, carazy pony lady at weekends!! Live in a 1950's building site with 5 acres in the beautiful Vale of Belvoir! Dependents - Daisy, my gorgeous 6 year old daughter, not only the inspiration for the Cuddly Pony Venture, but also a huge part of it! She is up at 6.30am with me to help work the ponies, she rides and shows Twinkle and she is brilliant helping the children at parties! Also Tango, our faithful Belgian Shepherd. Nearly 12 now but always our shadow, eager to help lunge ponies, hoping one day we will buy him his own sheep......!

My first pony and remembering

I've been reflecting, as you do when one year ends and another begins.  The radio is playing tunes from the 60s and I'm trying not to feel too sad as it reminds me of Mum and Dad and how much I miss them. While sorting through the mountain of old photos, I came across this one of me as a toddler. My fascination with horses obviously started at a young age! Looking at the picture made me smile.  Maybe you will too.

Guest Post: Eleanor McFarlane and Chester

Hearing from your readers is the best feeling, especially if they enjoy your stories, so today I'm so pleased to introduce guest blogger and pony enthusiast,  Eleanor McFarlane.

"I have read all of Jane Ayres' books, and thoroughly enjoyed each one. I don't have a favourite, but I really enjoyed Dark Horses and Matty and the Problem Ponies. I would give all of Jane's books 10 out of 10. Zephyr of Wild Horse Island was also amazing. This is my pony Chester. He is 11 years old and 12h 2. Chester is a perfect pony, like Snowstorm in the Matty books."

Thank you so much Eleanor - Chester is absolutely gorgeous and this is a wonderful photo!

Interview with Gemma Carnell, Fundraising Manager for Redwings Horse Sanctuary

I'm delighted that Gemma Carnell, Fundraising Manager for Redwings, kindly agreed to take some time out of her busy schedule to allow me to interview her.  Since all my royalties from sales of the Matty Horse and Pony Adventures are donated to Redwings, I thought it would be helpful for readers to learn more about the work of this amazing horse sanctuary and why donations are so vitally important.

Jane: How long have you been working as fundraiser for Redwings and what made you decide to work for a horse sanctuary?

Gemma: I have been working at Redwings for eight and a half years, but I first started to support the charity in 1988 when a friend adopted a pony called Pepper for me! I have always wanted to work for a charity and am proud to be a part of such an amazing organization where you can see the achievements all around you (I can hear a happy donkey braying as I type and can see a cheeky pony running round the veterinary recovery paddock!). The fact that we are not only here to rescue and rehabilitate horses and donkeys, but also offer life-long care to those who are too ill or too traumatized to live in a private home, is a remarkable thing. I genuinely do not believe that anyone else offers the level of care and dedication to so many horses.

Jane: Redwings is the largest sanctuary of its kind in the UK.  Can you give us an idea of the scale of funds needed to keep everything going to enable Redwings to rescue and care for horses and ponies that need help?

Gemma: Redwings relies 100% on donations made by the public – we receive no government funding. We need to raise at least £6 million a year just to care for the 1,250 horses that live with us. Nearly 60% of our income is received through legacies – a gift in a Will really makes a powerful difference. The rest of the funds we need are raised through people adopting a horse or making a donation.

Jane: Can you tell us a bit about what it’s like to work for Redwings.  Is there a typical day?

Gemma: No day is ever the same at Redwings and that is what makes working here extra special! We are a friendly, dedicated team working really hard to help horses in need and we are all prepared to muck in to ensure we use our resources in the best way possible to benefit our horses. Fundraising involves lots of time at  the computer, planning and analyzing, but I also spend a lot of time at our three (soon to be four!) Visitor Centres, where people can meet our horses in person for free. Keeping in touch with the supporters and seeing the horses is an important part of my job and one of the most rewarding.

Jane: What is the hardest thing about your job?

Gemma: Seeing a poorly horse arrive in a terrible state is always heartbreaking. Sadly we are seeing more and more of them and it never gets easier.

Jane: What do you like most?

Gemma: Driving up the road in the morning or on the way home at the end of a busy day and seeing fields full of happy horses, knowing that you have helped them be content and safe for another day.

Jane: Do you have any favourite horses, ponies or donkeys?

Gemma: Yes, but don’t tell the others! Tinkerbell the Shetland, Wellington the chocolate coloured cob (who has just been re-homed!), and Denise the donkey – they are all lovely and have very cheeky characters! You can read about Denise on the adoption pages of our website www.redwings.co.uk/adopting - I am also in love with the whole of the Breakfast Group – 19 young ponies who were rescued from Wales recently. They have the best names (such as Waffle, Weetabix and Bagel) and are all adorable – seeing them grow up and get well again has been such a privilege.

Wellington

And last but definitely not least, I absolutely love little Doc! Doc was born at Redwings after his Mum was rescued from the notorious Spindle Farm in Amersham in 2008 - he was the cutest, fluffiest foal I have ever seen and grew up to be a cheeky chap, always escaping under the paddock fence to the 'big boys' field' to try and share tea-time feeds. He and his family were named after fairytale characters as a symbol of the fairytale ending they had after their traumatic lives.

5 Star Reviews for Matty and the Moonlight Horse

Reviews are hard to get and lifeblood for a writer, so imagine how thrilled I was to read the latest review on Amazon for Matty and the Moonlight Horse, which says,

"In this book, Jane Ayres has created a pony novel which manages to combine the best of both traditional and modern pony stories. It will appeal to a wide range of readers, both youngsters and oldies re-visiting their horsy youth. A definite cut above the average teen pony story!"

Read the whole review here - and please buy the book, which has just been reduced in price for a limited period, as all royalties go to the Redwings Horse Sanctuary. Thanks!

Books, Mud and Compost. And Horses

The lovely Jane Badger Books blog called Books, Mud and Compost. And Horses has featured my Matty Books, which is wonderful!

The link is here http://booksandmud.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/help-redwings-horse-sanctuary.html but check out all the brilliant blog posts.  If you love horses and pony books you will love this site.

There is also a guest post from me called Ponies, Names and Happy Endings, which talks about my childhood and teens and my relationship with horses as an adult.  It starts like this:

Ponies, names, and happy endings by Jane Ayres

These days, I seem to forget so many things. The house is littered with post-it notes because if I don’t write it down, it will get forgotten.  So why is it that I can remember the names of most of the ponies I rode?

Matty Horse and Pony Adventures on kindle!

I have previously posted about my Matty series shortly being available as e-books and you can now buy them from Amazon.  Click on the links on the sidebar.

I am donating 100% of my royalties for all three books to the Redwings Horse Sanctuary http://www.redwings.org.uk/

Originally published in 1998, the first book, Matty and the Moonlight Horse was translated into Swedish, Norwegian, German and Finnish, and was later available in the USA, in paperback.   The second in the series, Matty and the Problem Ponies, was similarly published in 2000.  Matty and the Racehorse Rescue was published in 2002 and translated into German, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish.  This is the first time it has been available in the English language, and the kindle versions are the first time readers have been able to buy all three books in the UK. They are aimed at pony-mad pre-teen and teenage girls and are drawn from some of my own experiences.

The series starts with Matty and the Moonlight Horse.  Thirteen year old Matty and her fun-loving pony mad friends Ronnie, Spike and Gina work hard at the local stables, mucking out, sweeping the yard and grooming the ponies, hoping that Miss Pugh, the world’s worst riding instructor, will allow them a few rides.

Then impulsive Matty sneaks a ride on Snowstorm, a stunning new pony who she instantly falls in love with, much to the fury of his owner, Mark, and his domineering father. Matty wonders if she will ever get a pony of her own – especially one like Snowstorm.

So the teenage girls come up with a plan – to work even harder, pool their savings and earnings and buy a horse together.

One night, when they miss the last bus home from the cinema, they take a short cut through the graveyard, which they soon regret – until, at the stroke of midnight, they have an unexpected encounter with a mysterious dark bay horse.....

The mystery, action and adventure continues in Matty and the Problem Ponies and there is more drama and danger in the thrilling final story of the trilogy, Matty and the Racehorse Rescue, also available from Amazon on kindle.
